LEARNING ACTIVITIES
FOR EDUCATORS
Exploring the past can be an exciting and engaging experience. This is especially so when students can “see” some aspect of themselves in that past, such as when they trace the story of a relative or community member, or in other ways that encourage them to connect personally to content.
The learning activities provided on this website are intended for use by educators with their students. They are addressed directly to student users and are designed to encourage them to form thoughtful connections with the stories of the foresters of Newfoundland and Labrador and sometimes the people they met while overseas during the two world wars.
Following the landing page and introduction to the website, there are six themes that are explored in relation to each forestry unit and war. Learning activities are included below for each of these themes.
As educators, you may use these learning activities “ready-made” with your students. Alternatively, you can recraft them to fulfil specific curricular objectives and outcomes, to meet more effectively the needs of your students and to deepen a sense of connection between students and the content in the various sections of this website.
The learning activities incorporate an arts-based approach to teaching and learning. They encourage students to use digital arts and media in both their research and documentation of insights or findings.
You may wish to remind students to consider the design elements of the website itself as an example of arts-based representations of historical research.
