FIRST WORLD WAR
Migrations, Marriages and Memories
1: A Love Story (DIGITAL MEDIA)
Using digital tools, create a one- to two-minute vignette of a love story between a member of the NFC and a person met while overseas. Consider a love story such as the one between Ena Constance Culbard of Leicestershire, England, and John A. Barrett (NFC #8028).
2: Symbols of Commemoration (GRAPHIC DESIGN)
Design your own version of a British War Medal that would be given to members of the NFC.
3: A Love Story (VISUAL ART/COLLAGE)
Create a vintage poster for a war movie featuring the “based-on-real-events” love story between a member of the NFC and their overseas sweetheart. Do some research about posters from this era. Then, design the image(s) and write text for the poster that would help to promote your movie.
4: A Place to Remember (SCULPTURE)
Design a memorial that could be erected in Newfoundland and Labrador that would honour the work and legacy of the NFC.
5: “We’re Havin’ a Time” (SONGWRITING WORKSHOP)
Invite a local singer or songwriter to compose a song that reveals and/or celebrates the romance between a member of the NFC and their overseas sweetheart
6: “A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words” (PHOTOGRAPHY)
Create a photo essay (digital or non-digital) of a love story or friendship between a member of the NFC and someone overseas.
7: Remembering Those Who Served (BIOGRAPHY)
Research the story of an Indigenous forester who returned to Newfoundland or Labrador after the First World War. Here is one resource you can consult: https://qalipu.ca/indigenous-veterans-memorial-wall/.
